15 November 2024:
Flow Batteries Europe (FBE) is thrilled to announce that its Working Group on Carbon Footprint Calculation for Flow Batteries will launch on 12 December 2024.
The formation of the Working Group has been spurred by the Batteries Regulation which imposes an obligation that every flow battery placed on the European market should have a Carbon Footprint Declaration from 2023 onwards.
Given this, FBE aims to collectively develop a carbon footprint calculation methodology for flow batteries to help shape carbon footprint rules, thereby maintaining industry credibility and competitiveness.
Objective of the Working Group:
The Working Group aims to influence the development of carbon footprint calculation rules for flow batteries by working closely with industry stakeholders to collaborate on a methodology that meets specific needs and is rigorously tested.
To ensure comprehensive and accurate carbon footprint calculation rules are created, FBE is engaging with the entire supply chain, including suppliers, research organisations, and manufacturers.
Who is involved in the Working Group?
The Working Group brings together 16 committed organisations from across the world (see visual below), all united by a shared mission: to develop a rigorous methodology for calculating the carbon footprint of flow batteries.
The project is vital to define critical aspects of the final rules, such as the functional unit, representative manufacturing process, verification of flow battery lifetime, end-of-life processes, data modelling, and much more.
