4 July 2024:

Horizon 2020 supported the development of a smart European electricity grid, funding projects that focus on automation, energy storage integration and the adoption of renewable energy sources to aid the transition to a more sustainable energy system.

This is a priority area for Europe and investment in energy storage technologies and integration brings benefits both to the EU, and to our global society.  FBE will continue to promote the benefit of flow batteries as a key long duration energy storage technology and press for continued investment in the sector under the European Framework Programme Research and Innovation (FP10).

While the global technology race accelerates, the EU significantly lags behind in terms of investments in RD&I, in particular related to the long duration energy storage research such as flow batteries, compared to its global competitors.

For this reason, on 4 July 2024, Flow Batteries Europe joined 109 European Associations representing key European RD&I stakeholders by co-signing a statement on the next Framework Programme for Research and Innovation (FP10).

Flow Batteries Europe calls on the EU Institutions to significantly increase the current RD&I budget in view of next FP10.

We are ready to further discuss the design of FP10 with the EU Institutions.
