6 November 2024:

At yesterday’s parliamentary hearing, it was promising to hear the Commissioner-designate for Energy and Housing, Dan Jørgensen’s commitment to deploy more renewable energy along with new energy storage technology.

During the hearing, he mentioned that the EU needs to deploy more renewable energy, which would require extending grids, boosting digitalisation and new storage technology, and faster permitting. We agree with this position on the need to support the energy storage sector with collaboration from Member States, industry, and financial institutions.

The task of decarbonising the economy, lowering energy prices and enhancing Europe’s industrial competitiveness, will need further investments in energy storage facilities. The importance of deploying more energy storage is undeniable as they provide necessary flexibility, stability, and reliability for powering the energy system of the future.

A plan will be introduced by the new Commission to accelerate the transition away from Russian fossil fuels and according to Dan Jørgensen, the short-term solutions involve rapidly scaling up renewables and grid infrastructure.

You can watch the hearing replay here. Before the Commissioner-designates assume office, the entire College of Commissioners must be approved by a vote in the European Parliament, with the College potentially starting as early as December 2024.
