Europe’s energy independence will not be achieved without strengthening European Long-Duration Energy Storage (LDES).
That is a key message of the letter sent to the European Commission by 10 cleantech international organisations (Cleantech for Europe, Cleantech for Iberia, Cleantech for Italy, Energy Storage Europe, EnergyTag, FCA, IHA, LDES, Tech For Net Zero) including FBE, calling for long-duration energy storage to become a core pillar of Europe’s electrification and subsequent initiatives.
As renewable energy deployment accelerates and electricity demand continues to grow, Europe needs energy systems capable not only of generating clean power, but also of storing it reliably and flexibly over longer periods of time. This need for LDES is also an industrial opportunity and we must scale up LDES capabilities in Europe as a strategic sector.
LDES technologies, including flow batteries, can play a critical role in:
- Strengthening grid resilience and flexibility
- Supporting the integration of renewables at scale
- Enhancing Europe’s industrial competitiveness
- Reducing dependency on imported fossil fuels
- Reinforcing Europe’s energy security and strategic autonomy
As Europe shapes its future energy framework, long-duration storage must be recognised not as a mere supporting add-on, but as essential infrastructure for a resilient and decarbonised power system.
Now is the time to ensure policy frameworks fully reflect the strategic value of long-duration energy storage.
