The challenge
The village of Simris, in southern Sweden was looking to locally produce renewable energy but needed a way to store and utilise the energy.
The challenge was to ensure that customers in Simris who are connected to the local energy system would not experience a difference in the quality of power supplied by using a flow battery.
The solution
CellCube’s vanadium flow battery technology aimed to overcome the renewable intermittency and acts as a buffer between demand and supply of energy in the village.
At Simris, the CellCube system is performing energy-centric, electricity storage functions of providing continuous energy out of solar and wind for energy delivery.
This is a natural fit for CellCube’s vanadium flow batteries where long duration and reliable base load support is provided. Enerox’s CellCube vanadium redox flow battery is the backbone storage technology within the Simris project.

What were the results?
The Simris project has been a success story for E.ON where they have successfully proved that a local energy system is a technically viable alternative to the large-scale power system in providing clean, renewable energy to our customers.
The energy for the approximately 140 households come from wind turbines with installed capacity of 500 kilowatts (kW) and photovoltaic panels with 440 kW, supported by a flow battery system with 800 kW capacity.
They are increasing the energy storage capacity of the local energy system through a CellCube storage system, thus making sure that the village can utilise even more of the renewable energy produced on site.
The Simris project demonstrates how distributed renewable energy combined with energy storage can support quality power for distribution. The installation is seen as an important step for supporting future grid scale and decentralised storage system additions in the Scandinavian electricity markets.
