Two separate industry recognitions point to growing momentum behind XL Batteries’ Organic Flow Battery technology and its relevance to grid reliability and the fast growing data centre sector.

The challenge
As renewable generation continues to grow, grid operators face a widening gap between the shape of electricity demand and the shape of renewable supply, often described as the duck curve, where solar output surges in the middle of the day and falls away just as demand rises in the evening. Flattening that curve requires storage technologies that can shift large amounts of energy over long durations, reliably and at a cost that supports wide deployment.
At the same time, the rapid expansion of data centres is placing new and significant demands on the power grid, creating a pressing need for storage solutions that are safe, cost effective and able to scale alongside digital infrastructure.
The results
XL Batteries, a company building long duration energy storage based on organic flow battery chemistry, has picked up two notable third party recognitions within a matter of weeks.
In April, XL Batteries was selected as a 2026 BNEF Pioneer for its Organic Flow Battery under BloombergNEF’s Flattening the Duck Curve challenge, with BNEF recognising the technology’s ability to support grid reliability and enable greater deployment of renewable power. The BNEF Pioneers competition celebrates standout innovations with strong potential to support the energy transition, selecting 12 winners this year from more than 600 applicants. Since the programme launched in 2010, BNEF Pioneers have collectively raised nearly 20 billion dollars in follow on funding.
XL Batteries was also named Most Inspiring Startup at the 2026 Data Center World Innovation Challenge, a competition that recognises honorees demonstrating strong leadership, operational excellence and breakthrough innovation for the future of digital infrastructure.
Dr. Thomas Sisto, Co-Founder and CEO of XL Batteries, said the recognition from both BloombergNEF and Data Center World was a meaningful moment for the team, and pointed to it as confirmation of the role the company’s Organic Flow Battery technology can play in building a more resilient and scalable energy and digital infrastructure future.
The Organic Flow Battery builds on proven flow battery architecture, using patented organic molecules that are non-toxic, non-flammable and derived from globally abundant feedstocks, reducing exposure to supply chain volatility and geopolitical risk. XL Batteries completed its first fully integrated commercial pilot system with Stolthaven Terminals in September 2025, and in May of that year announced a multi-year agreement with Prometheus Hyperscale to deploy systems across multiple U.S. data centres, marking the first deployment of a flow battery at a U.S. data centre.
